"WANASIASA WANALETA VITA KWA MATANGA" Chaos Erupts at Matungu Burial Ceremony Amid Political Tensions
A funeral in Matungu, Kakamega County, turned chaotic on Saturday, February 8, 2025, when political rivalries between local leaders spilled over into the ceremony. The event, which was meant to honor the life of Augustine Odongo, a well-known businessman, saw violence erupt when Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa arrived with his supporters, leading to confrontations with rival groups.
Tensions mounted when Barasa's supporters, who were enthusiastically celebrating his arrival, caused a disturbance. This angered rival groups associated with Matungu MP Peter Nabulindo and former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa. What followed was a clash between the two factions, throwing the funeral into disarray.
Despite efforts from the presiding priest to calm the situation, the conflict escalated, with Barasa's supporters attempting to disperse the crowd. The altercation led to several injuries, including that of Mayoni ward MCA Fredrick Watitwa, who was hurt while trying to protect a youth attacked by Barasa's supporters. A police officer also sustained injuries from stones thrown during the melee.
Governor Barasa quickly condemned the violence, attributing it to hired "hooligans" sent to disrupt the event. He accused Echesa of organizing the disturbance by paying youths to create chaos. In a heated response, Echesa denied the accusations, stating that Barasa's supporters were the ones responsible for the disorder and intimidation, and he called for an investigation into the incident.
The incident caused significant distress for the grieving family, who expressed their disappointment at the disruption. They urged politicians to refrain from using funerals as platforms for political games and instead allow families to mourn in peace and dignity.
This violent episode highlights the growing political tensions in Kakamega County, where rivalries among local leaders have increasingly manifested in public events, causing concern among the community. As the situation develops, many are calling for a greater focus on unity and respect for solemn occasions, especially during times of mourning.
