THE FALL OF A TITAN: CELEBRATING THE LEGENDARY JOURNALIST LEORNAND MAMBO MBOTELA
Leonard Mambo Mbotela, born in 1940 in Mombasa, Kenya, was a distinguished broadcaster whose career spanned over six decades. He began his journey in journalism as a trainee reporter with the Kenya Weekly News and later worked with the East African Standard newspaper. In 1964, he joined the Voice of Kenya (VoK), now known as the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), where he became a household name. Mbotela was renowned for his captivating voice and his signature program, "Je, Huu ni Ungwana?" which aired on both Radio Taifa and KBC TV.
Throughout his illustrious career, Mbotela was celebrated for his football commentaries and his ability to engage audiences with insightful discussions on societal issues. His contributions to Kenyan media earned him numerous accolades and a special place in the hearts of many.
In his later years, Mbotela faced health challenges, including low blood pressure, which were attributed to his advanced age. He passed away on February 7, 2025, at the age of 85, in a Nairobi hospital.
His family has announced that his burial will take place on February 15, 2025.
Mbotela's passing has left a significant void in the Kenyan media landscape, and he is fondly remembered for his dedication to journalism and his role in shaping the country's broadcasting history.
