The AU Chairperson Race: Raila Odinga vs. Moussa Faki—Kenya’s Divided Views

As the African Union (AU) prepares for its pivotal leadership election, all eyes are on two key contenders—Kenya's own Raila Odinga and the incumbent Moussa Faki Mahamat. Raila, who has long been a dominant figure in Kenyan politics, is now vying for the prestigious role of Chairperson of the AU Commission, and the nation is split over his potential to lead the continent. With the election set for February 2025, Kenyans are offering their prayers and their opinions on the future of the AU.

Raila Odinga: A New Vision or Old Politics?

Raila Odinga’s candidacy has brought excitement among his supporters, who see him as a seasoned leader with a proven track record. Having served as Kenya’s Prime Minister and a key figure in pushing for democratic reforms, Odinga’s reputation as a fighter for peace and justice resonates strongly with those who believe Africa needs a leader with a deep understanding of the region’s challenges. For many, his experience in navigating complex political landscapes, both in Kenya and across Africa, positions him as the right choice to lead the AU in a new direction.

His supporters argue that Odinga’s leadership could bring fresh energy to the AU, pushing for reforms and new policies aimed at economic integration, conflict resolution, and fostering deeper unity among African nations. The hope is that his extensive network of diplomatic ties, both within Africa and globally, could be a powerful tool for enhancing the AU’s influence on the world stage.

Skepticism and Criticism: Can Raila Lead Beyond Kenya?

However, not all Kenyans share this enthusiasm. Critics point to Odinga’s repeated failures in presidential elections, questioning whether his political career has been more about personal ambition than genuine service to the broader African cause. Some feel that his long-standing association with Kenya’s political elite could make it difficult for him to break free from the nationalistic ties that might hinder his ability to act as a neutral, continent-wide leader.

Further concerns include his shifting alliances within Kenyan politics, such as the controversial 2018 handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta, which left some questioning his true intentions. Detractors argue that the AU needs a leader who can transcend local politics and represent the continent’s diverse needs without appearing tied to one nation’s internal struggles.

Moussa Faki: Stability or Stagnation?

On the other side of the race is the incumbent, Moussa Faki Mahamat, who has served as the Chairperson of the AU Commission since 2017. Faki’s supporters point to his accomplishments during his tenure, notably his role in advancing institutional reforms within the AU and his handling of critical issues like the crisis in Sudan and the Tigray conflict. They see him as an experienced diplomat who has built relationships with key leaders across the continent, providing him with the necessary credibility and knowledge to continue his work at the helm of the AU.

However, Faki’s critics argue that his time in office has not been transformative enough. Some feel his leadership has failed to drive bold changes or effectively address Africa’s persistent problems, such as poverty, conflict, and political instability. For them, the AU needs a fresh face, someone with a new vision and approach to governance—someone like Raila Odinga.

Kenyans Pray for the Future of the AU

As the AU election approaches, a growing movement of Kenyans has turned to prayer. Religious groups have been organizing prayer sessions, asking for divine guidance in choosing a leader who will prioritize the prosperity and unity of the African continent. With both Odinga and Faki having their supporters and critics, many Kenyans are hoping for a fair process and a wise decision that will benefit Africa as a whole.

Looking Ahead: February 2025

The stage is set for a fierce battle when the AU election takes place in February 15 2025. With Raila Odinga challenging the incumbent Moussa Faki, the decision will have far-reaching consequences not only for Kenya but for the entire continent. As the clock ticks down, Kenya’s divided opinions and fervent prayers underscore the significance of this moment in African politics.

Whether Raila’s long-awaited chance to lead Africa becomes a reality or whether Faki will secure another term in office remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the outcome will shape Africa's future in ways both profound and lasting.
